Meet Our Magical Waters

Discovered by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe centuries ago, the Mother Spring is at the heart of The Springs. European settlers stumbled upon it more than 150 years ago, but they knew they weren’t the first: the ground around the pool was packed by human footprints, with paths radiating out from the 75-foot-diameter bubbling pool like spokes from the hub of a wheel. Native Americans had been enjoying the waters of this natural hot mineral spring for generations before others found the special waters. Legends and stories abound of this mystical source and it’s been studied and measured since the 1800s. Our beginnings are humble, but our origins are the stuff of legends.

The Spring Inn

Once the medicinal effects of the waters were studied by U.S. Army physicians in the 1860s and reported, news spread and people flocked to the area, and the first bathhouse was built in 1881. Rail travel brought travelers from far and wide to “take the waters” in the early 1900s, and new motels began popping up when road trippers began making their pilgrimage in the 1950s. The Classic building at The Springs Resort was part of the original motel, called The Spring Inn by a previous owner. Over the years, as the secret of the healing waters spread the resort added the Deluxe building and the Luxury Lodge and has become a pillar for relaxation and restoration for many.

The Springs Resort in the Community

Caring for the enhanced well-being of all is The Springs Resort’s noble purpose statement. We aren’t speaking only of “all resort guests” when we say “all.” We are proud members of the Pagosa Springs community. We strive each day to care for the enhanced well-being of all our guests, our employees, and our community.

“There can scarcely be a more beautiful place on the face of the earth.”

Captain J. N. Macomb, U. S. Army Surveyor and the first settler to write about the spring. He also predicted in his writings that the area around the Great Spring would some day “become a place of great resort.” A visit to The Springs Resort today is proof positive of Captain Macomb’s vision and great gift of prophecy.
